Gary MacCready
Gary grew up in Minersville, PA, and studied in the Monterey Bay
area of California with watercolorist Dave McGuire and also with Howard Ikemoto
while studying at Cabrillo College. His interest in art and painting began when
he was attending the University of Pennsylvania, fueled by very frequent trips
to the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Watercolor paintings of gentle mountains, contemplative seascapes,
and abstracts; these are the results of lasting impressions of many years of
travel. Deep feelings of beauty were nurtured in the heart of the artist by many
years of traveling through most of the United States.
Gary’s art has been featured in many exhibitions including shows at
the Art and Ethnic Center, Pottsville, PA, The Gallery, Schuylkill Haven, PA,
and The Art Gallery, Santa Cruz, CA. In June 2001, his work was selected for a
two-artist exhibition with the internationally acclaimed artist Shozo Nagano at
the Art and Ethnic Center, Pottsville, PA. Gary is an artist in residence for
the Schuylkill County Council for the Arts and is a member of the Pennsylvania
Watercolor Society.
Gary gained prominent international recognition as a national
recording and touring artist in the field of Jazz, appearing on the top 20
National Jazz Airplay charts during his tenure with the ensemble Northwind in
1981 through 1987. His music was reviewed in the Washington Post, DownBeat,
Jazziz Magazine, and Cadence Magazine, among others. His music was played on
hundreds of radio stations in many countries of the world, and the music was
featured on television and airline programming.
I can only obtain a glimpse of its beauty. Art is expression, it is
perspective, it is romance, it is beauty. The feelings I get when I paint are
strong feelings, and they are motivated by pure expression, but they feel
calming to me. -- Gary
